With effect from 1 September 2017, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Construction and Reactor Safety (BMUB) has in its capacity of shareholder in the Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH (BGE) appointed Dr. Thomas Lautsch as Technical Managing Director. Since 2014, Dr. Lautsch has been Managing Director of the Deutsche Gesellschaft zum Bau und Betrieb von Endlagern für Abfallstoffe mbH (DBE) [German Company for the Construction and Operation of Final Repositories for Waste Materials]. In this position, the 56-year-old has been responsible since January 2015 for the technical areas of the company group. Dr. Lautsch is a qualified Mining Engineer.
Dr. Lautsch secures the full complement of BGE Board of Directions. The other BGE Managing Directors are Ursula Heinen-Esser (Chair), Dr. Ewold Seeba (Deputy Chair) and Prof. Dr. Hans-Albert Lennartz (Commercial Managing Director).
The BGE is a federal government company in the Federal Environment Ministry business area. On 25 April 2017, it took over responsibility from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) as operator of the Asse II shaft mine and the Konrad and Morsleben final repositories. Its other responsibilities include the search for a final repository particularly for heat-generating radioactive waste.
The privately-run company of the Federal Government will exploit new opportunities to achieve project goals more effectively. The company channels specialist expertise and exploits synergies. To serve this puropose, the DBE and Asse GmbH will be merged with the BGE before the end of the year. This will ensure that the field of final storage remains completely under governmental responsibility. The primary priorities remain safety and expertise.
