As of 25 April 2017, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety transferred tasks in the field of radioactive waste disposal to the BGE. The BGE is responsible for the operative implementation of the site selection procedure for a repository for especially heat-generating radioactive waste. Furthermore, it is the operator of the Asse II mine, the Konrad repository, and the Morsleben repository.
Legal basis of the transfer of tasks is the Act on the Rearrangement of the Organisational Structure in the Field of Radioactive Waste Disposal which became effective on 30 July 2016. Until the tasks were transferred to the BGE, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) had remained responsible for the transferred tasks for a transitional period.
The BGE is still in the development stage. On 25 April 2017, the BfS staff who had been entrusted with the aforementioned tasks were assigned to the new company. In the months to come, the Asse-GmbH and the DBE will also join the BGE.
